SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 23-year-old woman believed to be involved in at least seven cases of cheating by impersonating as the victims’ cousin.

Investigations revealed that the suspect obtained the contact number of victims through Facebook.

Based on posts on the account, she managed to identify the names of the victim's cousin.

She would then SMS the victims assuming the identity of their cousin and claiming that she had lost or changed her mobile phone number.

The suspect would request for a loan of between $500 to $2,000 urgently and asked the victims to transfer the money to her bank account.

Police first received reports from victims in December last year. Officers managed to establish the identity of the suspect through follow-up investigations and the suspect was nabbed on Jan 10.

The suspect will be charged in court on Jan 11. If convicted, she faces a maximum jail term of 10 years imprisonment and also a fine.

Police would also like to urge the other victims who may have also fallen prey to this cheating ruse to come forward and lodge a police report.

The public is advised to be vigilant against a similar ruse and to exercise due diligence to check and verify the identity of the individual before parting with their money.

Members of the public are also advised to restrict their personal information to reliable and known persons on social media.
