Melody Chong Win, 25, sleighhanded two purses worth S$450 from Harvey Nichols London store on Boxing Day. Chong was visiting London on a "sales holiday" and committed the crime with her aunt, Ling Foe, 65.

The duo spent a night at a local police station cell after being taken into custody by the London police. The pair was later convicted of theft by Westminister magistrstes and fined S$210 for their deeds.




The women were lucky: the same crime committed in Singapore would have mandated a jail sentence
