A SINGAPOREAN man attempted suicide after he was arrested by Thai officials at a border checkpoint with more than 4,000 ecstasy pills, MCOT news reported on Tuesday.

Ang Beng Bee, 46, was caught with the pills and other illicit drugs, worth about US$113,800 (S$152,200), in the Sadao district near the Thai-Malaysian border.

The head of Sadao Customs House,� Paisarn Chuenjit, said Ang was a passenger in a van crossing from Malaysia into Thailand, which was randomly checked by custom officers.

�While the van was being searched, the officials noticed him behaving suspiciously. They checked his luggage and found 4,384 ecstasy pills, 1 gm of� crystal methamphetamine or 'ice', and five Erimin 5 (nimetazepam) pills, which had an overall street value of about US$113,800.

When the officers found the drugs and arrested Ang, he went berserk and tried to kill himself by cutting his wrists and throat, MCOT reported.

Ang, who is said to be fluent in the Thai language, told the officers he travelled from Johor to sell the drugs to tourists in Sadao and Hat Yai..

He was sent to Sadao Hospital for treatment.
