<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR>Single-meter taxi fare overdue
</TR><!-- headline one : end --><!-- show image if available --></TBODY></TABLE>
<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->THE letter by Mr Paul Chan last Wednesday ('High cab rentals and surcharges akin to price fixing') correctly identifies all problems associated with taxis in Singapore.
He hit the nail on the head several times when he mentioned high rent paid by cabbies, Electronic Road Pricing charges on cab travel and customer-unfriendly impediments (the myriad of surcharges and times when charges are imposed - customers find it difficult to remember or comprehend).
It is time to simplify things and introduce a single taxi fare system. This will lift the burden from customers (especially tourists) and cabbies, and make taxi rides pleasant and affordable, once and for all. R. Jaichandra
