In the latest political forum in which PAP refused to participate, Socialist Front secretary-general Chia Ti Lik called on Singaporeans to give PAP a ‘black eye’ at the next elections.
What is interesting is that that sentiment is already widely held by many Singaporeans. In a country where the average Singaporean voter used to say that he/she is afraid to vote for an opposition party as PAP might find out, today it is so common to hear Singaporeans say that they will vote for the opposition party in their constituency no matter which party it may be. What is clear is that a segment of Singapore voter population is gearing up to give PAP a black eye at the polls.
Cynics will however argue that the outcome at next election will be the same as before and that Singaporeans do not have the courage to vote against PAP. However PAP has itself resigned to losing to a maximum of few more seats including perhaps a GRC.
PAP has increased the number of NCMPs in an effort to make sure they do not lose more than a GRC or a few SMCs. PAP’s strategy to break up the GRCs into SMCs and smaller 3 man GRCs is a clear indication that PAP knows how many Singaporeans are likely to give it a ‘black eye’.
What remains unknown is whether the ‘black eye’ will knock PAP out of power or whether it will put a large opposition force in parliament like never ever before. One thing for sure – we can expect more rampant gerry-mandering, dirty tricks and character assassination by the despicable PAP to ‘fix’ the opposition to ensure its political hegemony remains intact.
We must remember the ugly truth that Singapore is a not a ‘democracy’, but a ‘dictatorship’ and dictators can never be voted out of power though the next election may be the last window of opportunity for Singaporeans to reclaim the ownership of their nation.
While the opposition may gain considerable ground in the coming election, our best hope lies in the passing of the dictator triggering an internal split within the PAP before there can be considerable political liberalization and reform in Singapore.
There is an old Chinese saying – ‘Family wealth can never be passed beyond three generations.’ Even North Korea is experiencing problems with its ’succession plan’. How long more can the present status quo last?

Who is giving who a black eye?

Mahathir the then PM of Malaysia gave his opponent and deputy a black eye. Singapore should learn from Mahathir and give the opposition parties a black eye.
