SINGAPORE : Singaporean Sophia Pang has been selected to represent the country for an expedition to the South Pole.
She will join six others from Commonwealth countries like Brunei, New Zealand, India and the United Kingdom, in the Commonwealth Women's Antarctic Expedition.
Come New Year's Day 2010, Pang is hoping to stand on the South Pole, planting the Singapore flag atop a layer of ice.
This comes after she was chosen over fellow Singaporean Lina Goh, for an all-female expedition to reach the bottom of the world.
A switch from sunny Singapore to sub-zero temperatures seems challenging enough. But the mother of three had already passed skiing in testing weather conditions in Scandinavia.
The group is scheduled to begin its expedition, on skis, in December.
They will ski over 800 kilometres, hauling sledges containing their food and equipment, and camp on the ice. - CNA/ms
