You look at the current impasse with both Democrats and Republicwhen digging in their heels and naturally think of America as a deeply divided country....that is a tempting thesis for the rest of the world except we forget America is a democracy and divide on the ground will show up in the elected representative.
Yesterday the COE hit $93k ...a week ago the NUS reported that there are many working poor people in Singapore. Go back a few more weeks Blomberg reported that 1 in 5,in Singapore will be millionaires in a few years.,.go back one more week before that report, there was another one that said 30% of Singaporeans are worried they cannot cope with rising food prices. Somewhere along the way one 29 yr old in Singapore was reported to own a $73M luxury boat....while many singaporeans cannot cope with their medical bills.
We kid ourselves to believe that our social divide can be small whwn we have
a third world wage structure. Our deep divide is masked by the lack of democracy and extensive use
of propaganda to manufacture a false consensus. As such the cracks begin to show up once the truth cannot be hidden.
5 decades of pap rule has resulted in the most unequal society in the developed world. The pap created 2 society ...a privilege class of elite sitting on top of the struggle class below. Years of extractive policies to keep wages low, minimise workers benefits, pro foreign labor ( Singaporeans not first) policies have had a devastating effect on our social structure. Never has the interests of the workers and businesses been more separated in our history. Really everything from trust, morality to human values has been eroded by this structure. The architecture of LKY's society is highly flawed ...like a child that is hot housed to do well for exams (analogous to GDP) but his psychology, character and morality is all underdeveloped and wrong....something must give, the system will break.
