SINGAPORE — A prison officer accused of soliciting bribes from an inmate was hit with two more charges relating to computer misuse offences on Thursday (Nov 23).

Kobi Krishna Ayavoo, a senior chief warder with the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) purportedly wanted the inmate number of Chong Keng Chye, whom he had allegedly obtained bribes from. To get the information, the 50-year-old allegedly instigated two colleagues to access data stored on a prison portal without authorisation. It was not stated in court why he wanted the information.

Kobi is accused of instigating Staff Sergeant Firoz Khan Shaik Fazaluddin, 41, to illegally access the portal, called Prisons Operations and Rehabilitaiton System (Ports), on July 24. Firoz was also charged on Thursday with one count of unauthorised access to the portal.

On the same day, Kobi allegedly instigated another colleague, chief warder with the SPS Mohamed Sarraj Shadul Hameed, to obtain unauthorised access to unspecified data in the portal.

In July this year, Kobi was charged with eight counts of attempting to obtain bribes — amounting to S$81,000 in cash and loans — from Chong. The alleged offences were done to facilitate Chong’s request for a transfer out of Changi Prison Cluster A1.

If convicted of illegally accessing prison data, Firoz and Kobi could each be fined up to S$5,000, and/or jailed up to two years.

If he is found guilty of attempting to obtain bribes, Kobi could face up to five years’ jail and/or a fine of up to S$100,000, per charge.

Kobi will return to court on Dec 21, while Firoz will return to court on Dec 7.
