S$200,000 healthcare fund for needy seniors in Northeast District
Northeast Community Development Council (CDC) has partnered food company New Moon to set up a Seniors' Healthcare Fund.
New Moon's donation of $100,000 was matched dollar for dollar by the CDC.
The S$200,000 fund aims to help seniors who are unable to cope with their healthcare expenses.
It was launched by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on Sunday.
DPM Teo said: "There are other schemes available, of course, for healthcare. But for those who have exhausted all those schemes, the Northeast District is putting in place this senior healthcare fund to help with their health expenses, particularly those who have continuing expenses for things like diapers and so on, and are living at home."
Mr Teo also took part in the five-kilometre New Moon Big Walk for charity.
New Moon had pledged to donate 100 bowls of rice for each participant.
Despite a persistent drizzle, some 3,800 people showed up to lend their support to the cause, including New Moon ambassadors Fann Wong and Jeanette Aw.
Some 400,000 bowls of rice were raised to be distributed to the needy in all 17 divisions of Northeast District.
