SINGAPORE: Some 150 households of one block in Chin Swee Road took part on Sunday in Singapore's first-ever mass exercise to get rid of bed bugs.
Officials say four out of every 10 households there are bugged by the problem.
However, the campaign is targeting 22 rental blocks in the area as the residents are at higher risk of bed bug infestation, but can't afford the minimum S$1,000 it costs for cleanup.
MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC, Dr Lily Neo, who launched the campaign on Sunday morning said the aim is to improve the living conditions of the elderly and poor.
She said: "About 40 per cent of these homes are infested with bed bugs. But in order to get rid of it, it's not simple and it's not cheap due to many reasons - financial or others.
"Many of them may not be able to get rid of the bed bugs, even if they want to.
"Their priorities are not on these areas. Their priorities may be to fill their stomachs first.
"Then, this (bed bug infestation) is another thing that is troubling them but they may not have any way or financial means to solve this. So, that is where we come in."
The cleanup will start with a thorough inspection by exterminators, made easier by a dog called Sparky, which will be making the rounds in the flats to sniff out the bugs.
Some 100 volunteers will help the residents pack their belongings and prepare their homes for extermination work. The residents will also have their clothes treated in a heated dryer to get rid of hidden bugs or eggs.
It will cost S$250,000 to clean up an entire block. The pilot phase of the campaign will run for two months.
The pilot phase of the campaign will run for two months, before its extended to other rental blocks in the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng precinct of the Tanjong Pagar GRC, including include the Chinatown, Havelock and Lower Delta areas.
