Singapore | For eight weeks last year Singaporeans were barely let out of their homes and their government has warned a repeat could be on the cards.

From Saturday, social gatherings will be limited to five people, offices capped at 50 per cent capacity, and gyms will close in a bid to reduce the growing number of locally transmitted COVID-19 cases. These restrictions will last at least until the end of May.

Singapore is also reviewing the travel bubble with Hong Kong that was due to begin on May 24.

The government has warned that if unlinked cases continue to rise, another circuit breaker – as the lockdown-like period in April and May last year was known – is a possibility.

Seven people have been infected with the Indian variant of COVID-19 that is believed to be highly contagious. Five of these were found in a cluster at Singapore’s Tan Tock Seng Hospital that has grown to 40 cases.

The new restrictions also include increased quarantine periods for many international arrivals who will now be isolated for three weeks, up from a fortnight. Entry from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka is banned, except for Singaporean citizens and permanent residents.

As of Tuesday, the seven-day moving average of local community cases was 8.6. This is the highest since July, according to a Nomura analysis. Unlinked cases are averaging 1.43.

The Singapore-Hong Kong air travel bubble requires both cities to stay below an average of five unlinked cases a day.
