A quick getaway to neighbouring island Batam turned into tragedy for eight Indian expatriates based in Singapore after three of them met with a fatal accident.
The three were killed in a pre-dawn accident on Sunday when their rental car crashed into a stationary lorry.
Two of the deceased, Rajendran Praveen Nair from India and Akshayrajesh Vohora from Britain, both 22, were cremated at Mandai on Wednesday, following funeral services held in neighbouring halls, reported The Straits Times.
Nair, whose family is based in Singapore, was a game design student at the University of Newcastle through the PSB Academy. However, it is not known what Vohora did for a living.
The third person was 22-year-old Singapore Management University graduate Siddharth Kamal. His body was flown to New Delhi on Monday after it arrived here on a ferry from Batam.
On Thursday, one of the expatriates who had gone on the ill-fated holiday told the same paper that they decided to travel to Batam because it was nearby and less costly. He declined to be named.
"We were just going for two days, so we didn't want to go too far away," adding that the group was in the town of Nagoya to celebrate one of their birthdays on Saturday night. He said that they also drank beer.
The trio said they were hungry and took the rental car out to buy food while the rest decided to return to the Swiss-Inn Hotel where they were staying.
The accident took place in an industrial estate in Batu Ampar. Meanwhile, the other five realized something was amiss only when Nair, Vohora and Kamal did not show up for breakfast.
They also knew about the accident after being informed by police later. The friend who declined to be named added, "It has been a very difficult time. We're all very upset, we just don't want more publicity about this."
