Nigerian who secretly filmed sex acts with two men in Singapore jailed for blackmail attempts

Okereke Ransom Okechukwu met his two victims over the Grindr dating app.
On separate occasions, the 34-year-old Nigerian national had been invited over by the men for sex and later attempted to blackmail them. He even threatened to shoot one of the victims.
At the State Courts on Monday (8 April), Okechukwu admitted to two counts of criminal intimidation and was sentenced to a year’s jail. The victims cannot be named to protect their identities.
Secretly filmed sex acts
Okechukwu met the first victim, a 36-year-old Singapore permanent resident, on 19 May last year through Grindr.
At 4.30pm on the same day, Okechukwu visited the victim’s residence. As the victim performed oral sex on Okechukwu, the latter retrieved his smartphone from his back pocket.
Lying to the victim that he had something to check on his phone, Okechukwu began to secretly film the victim during the sex act.
Later, Okechukwu demanded $500 from the victim, who refused to pay him. In response, Okechukwu showed the victim the video he had recorded and threatened to circulate it.
The victim then said he had to visit a UOB ATM to obtain the money, which spurred Okechukwu to hurl more threats at him. Both men proceeded to International Plaza, where the victim withdrew $200 for Okechukwu. The victim claimed he was unable to withdraw more money as he had hit his withdrawal limit.
Insisting on the remaining $300, the victim then visited another ATM with Okechukwu to withdraw the money. Claiming that the victim had lied to him, Okechukwu demanded another $500 while ignoring the victim’s pleas to delete the video.
The victim then decided to call the police and walked away from Okechukwu, who followed while shouting. Okechukwu fled when he realised that the victim had called the police.
Outwitted by second victim
A day later, Okechukwu tried the same ploy with a second victim, a 32-year-old Australian national. This time, he visited the victim’s hotel room at M Hotel on Anson Road.
While there, Okechukwu claimed that he wanted to watch pornography on his phone while having the victim perform oral sex on him.
However, the victim heard sounds from coming from Okechukwu’s phone and suspected that the latter was recording a video. The victim then questioned Okechukwu, who demanded $1,500 from him.
When the victim refused, Okechukwu threatened to kill him with a gun. The victim then suggested obtaining money from the hotel’s reception counter. Once Okechukwu stepped out of the room, the victim locked the door and called the hotel’s security staff.
Okechukwu fled from the hotel by the time the security staff arrived but was arrested three days later at Hotel 81 Hollywood in Geylang.
For criminal intimidation, Okechukwu could have been jailed up to two years as well as fined or caned. For threatening to kill the second victim, he could have been jailed for seven years or more.
