Singaporean Sherena Loh, born with incurable muscular dystrophy, shared an encounter she had several decades ago in Singapore. She encountered a large pack of dogs, panicked, tried to run, but fell from her weak muscles and could not move. She cried for help, but several Singaporean people passing by just ignored her. In contrast, one of the dogs came up to her, and looking into its eyes, she was surprised that she felt a distinct sense of sympathy from it. The dog then walked away, bringing the pack with it.
In that moment, she said the powerful realization struck her, "The dog was capable of more sympathy & empathy than the human beings who ignored my cries for help."
