SINGAPORE: Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) member William Lim on Sunday (Aug 30) announced his resignation from the party, two days ahead of Nomination Day.

In a statement, Mr Lim said he resigned from the party due to "personal reasons". He had been with the party since July 2014.

"I have done my best to help the party prepare for the General Election and it is time for me to leave and pursue my own interests," said Mr Lim, in response to media queries. He added that he was looking into a new business venture.

The statement also announced that the Singapore Cabbies Association (SCA) "was never associated with" SDA, even though the party had registered the association just last week on Aug 20.

"The SCA is a non-partisan association. I just happened to be a SDA member when it was set up," explained Mr Lim, who will remain the founding president of SCA.

The 200-member SCA aims to protect the rights and welfare of taxi drivers in Singapore.

In response to media queries, SDA chairman Desmond Lim said Mr William Lim has every right declare SCA independent of the party, pointing out that SCA applied to the Registry of Societies on Aug 20 and is still pending approval.

"This is an unimportant issue and we rather focus on the election," said Mr Desmond Lim, who also thanked Mr Lim for his contribution to the party.

When asked how his departure will affect SCA's membership, Mr William Lim said: "I think it will be a good thing. People will prefer an association that is not affiliated to a political party. They will be more willing to participate and help out."
