SINGAPORE: After two disappointing results in recent months, Singapore finally got the boost they needed on Tuesday night.
A 2-0 win over India in an international friendly, watched by 3,448 fans at the Choa Chu Kang stadium, gave the Lions a rare victory to savour following recent disappointing results.
Radojko Avramovic's men lost 2-0 to the Philippines and were held 1-1 by Myanmar in their previous two matches, so when Khairul Amri slotted home Singapore's opening goal in the 42nd minute, a sense of hope started to rise within the ranks of the Lions.
By then, India were struggling to cope with Singapore's positive play and attacking movements, with evergreen 42-year-old striker Alesandar Duric at the heart of every move.
Although Khairul's goal was scored with a little help from India goalkeeper Paul Subrata's poor goal kick, the Singapore striker nevertheless took his chance well.
Fazrul Nawaz then fired a left-footed shot from the edge of the six-yard box in the 49th minute to make it 2-0.
After that, India were chasing a lost cause.
To make matters worse for the visitors, their skipper and regular goalscorer Sunil Chetri, who plies his trade in the Portuguese league, was taken out of the game just after the hour mark because of an injury, a move that left India struggling up front.
"It was a good workout for us given that the Indians put up such a brave front," said assistant coach Aide Iskandar.
"They are technically gifted and were worthy opponents.
"But in the end, the win was a welcome change. Perhaps we can take the positives from tonight's match and move on with greater confidence for the AFF Suzuki Cup next month," he added.
