A nation that refuses to heal its wounds.
KC Chew, a Harvard graduate imprisoned twice under the ISA for the bogus charge of a Marxist conspiracy in 1987/88, urges the government to seek reconciliation by issuing a national apology for the wrongful arrests and torture of ISA detainees.
Via Kheng Chuan Chew
"Know your history. Know your damned history!
Thank you, Lysa Hong, Pingtjin Thum.
If the Government has a flash of inspired action for SG50, they would think about how best to make a national apology to their political opponents past and present who have suffered under the ISA.
An apology can take many forms. It need not mean that you were wrong, but that you are sorry for having used unnecessarily vicious force of detention, banishment and exile for those who were worthy opponents, patriots who were also trying to build a nation like you, with whom you fought and won.
It can mean you recognize their rightful place in the history of nation-building.
An apology would be the most inspired way to win the respect and mandate from the citizens of Singapore for the PAP to provide governing leadership in the years to come.
After 50 years of nation building achievements, this is not the time to be small and small-minded.
This is the time to ask for forgiveness for what wrongs you have done unto others which you now regret, and from which we can move forward to the future with greater strength and cohesion and as a unique society, with a new pride and unity."
KC Chew speaks at 1:05 in this video.
