Mr Sitoh Yih Pin,MP for Potong PasirDear Sir, 1
st June 2011
REQUEST FOR MR SITOH YIH PIN, MP FOR POTONG PASIR, TOHONOR HIS WORD AND RETAIN THE EMPLOYMENT OF ALL THESTAFF OF POTONG PASIR TOWN COUNCIL.
We would like to bring to your attention as a reminder of what you had saidpersonally to Mrs Lina Chiam in the early morning of the day after the GeneralElections, and within the ears of Counting Agents from both the SPP and PAP:“Since you have raised this issue to me personally, I will keep all the staff at theTown Council. I will honor my words.”From the recent press statements and news on the retention of the 16 Potong PasirTown Council staff, we see that you have gone against what you had promised. Weare now writing to address this issue. That, on the 27
th of May when you took over the PPTC, the staff were told thatthey were terminated and were each given an application form to re-apply for theirjob under the new EM Services company. We understand that to date all except for3 of them have been served the termination notice. Under this arrangement, if theywere to re-apply for hiring under the EM Services company and be accepted, theyshall be deployed to other town councils and their employment conditions shall besubjected to their new contract with EM Services.
1)
We request that you honor the promise you made to keep all the staff at theTown Council. Terminating them and referring them to reapply to be hiredunder a different employer - EM Services, is not the same as the promise tokeep them.
2)
Further to this,
a.
There was no reason given for their termination except that you arenow in-charge. This is not a rational ground for termination to theircontract of employment.
b.
Some of the staff have been working for the town council for morethan 5-10 years. Their loyalty, commitment and sacrifice to thecontributions made to serve the constituents of Potong Pasir areimmeasurable. Even if you did choose to go back on your word andterminate them, there has been no offer of appropriate and adequatecompensation in terms of severance or retrenchment package forthem. We do not think this is a fair and equitable termination practicebased on accepted industry and HR practice. It is unfortunate that you have decided to terminate the staff of PPTC who haddutifully served the Potong Pasir residents all these years when you have said thatyou would not do so.We call upon you to make right the above situation, reinstate all the staff back tothe Potong Pasir Town Council or offer an appropriate retrenchment or severancepackage. We thank you for your kind consideration in this matter.Yours Sincerely,
(Please find list of signatories attached.)
