Just minutes after the announcement of Palmer’s resignation broke yesterday (12-12-12), a Facebook page, calling for an immediate by-election for Punggol East SMC surfaced.
Within 24 hours, more than 2,000 Facebook users have ‘liked’ the page.
The Facebook page, ‘Calling for By Election for Punggol East SMC‘, wrote:
Fellow Singaporeans, 12/12/12 is a good day for us, for we are inching a step closer to bringing down the PAP’s domination in Parliament. Punggol East SMC residents have been let down by the PAP, and as much as this is a local issue, this is also a national referendum.
We must let the PAP know how unhappy Singaporeans are of the Public Transport Fare hike. A by-election is the real National Conversation.
Vote for Change, vote the PAP out!
Another Facebook page, ‘By-election for Punggol East‘, has also quickly surfaced within a day of Palmer’s resignation, reflecting the public interest in holding a by-election for Punggol East SMC. The Facebook page wrote:
Seats that have been vacated have to be filled up in order to ensure democratic representation. It should be automatic and not up to anyone’s discretion. It makes no sense for the Prime Minister, who represents one party himself, to be able to decide, including to decide non-affirmatively, whether and when to hold a by-election.
We are a democratic Republic and should live up to its minimum standards.
We have to not only call for PM Lee to grant us a by-election in Punggol East, but for our courts to take away that power of “discretion” from our PM, in order that anytime in the future, there is such an occurrence, there is no need for such campaigns on such facebook pages as this, to put pressure on the PM to hold the elections. It is automatic even in neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia, so what are we fretting about?
When Singapolitics ask “By-election in Punggol East?” you know we have a problem.
When people need to plead the PM for a by-election, you know we have a problem.
Although the PM would most likely hold one, because it would make him look like a complete fool if he does not, although we would see more wayang first before that “grand announcement” is going to be made, the PM should not have this luxury in the first place.
Return the right of representation to the people! Automatic by-election for Punggol East!
Even the Wikipedia entry on Punggol East Single Member Constituency [Link] was immediately updated to reflect that the former MP, Michael Palmer, “resigned on 12-12-2012 due to improper conduct”.
That is how fast information moves in cyberspace, something that the ruling party has to cope with in the new era of social media.
