BANGKOK: A man has contracted the Zika virus in Thailand, officials said Tuesday (Feb 2), as a global alert intensifies over the mosquito-borne infection blamed for a surge in serious birth defects in South America.

Authorities said the 22-year-old Thai man is likely to have caught the same strain of the virus that has caused panic in countries such as Brazil and Colombia. The virus "was confirmed by blood tests", Air Vice Marshall Santi Srisermpoke, director of Bangkok's Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital, told reporters.

"His symptoms were a fever, a rash and redness of the eyes," he said, adding he had not travelled abroad.

The man has recovered and been discharged from hospital, he added, without giving further details of how long he was in hospital, or where he contracted the sickness.

Amnuay Gajeena, director-general of the Disease Control Department of the Public Health Ministry, said it was "likely to be the same strain as the one found in South America".

"It's not a new disease in Thailand... we had the first confirmed case in 2012. Since then we have an average of not more than five cases yearly," he said. "There is no need to panic... we have never had an epidemic of the Zika virus in Thailand all of the cases were one-offs."

The Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also spreads dengue fever, carries the sickness. It breeds in tropical areas, including Thailand, which has seen a surge in cases of dengue in recent months.

The World Health Organization linked a spike in birth defects in South America to the virus.

The UN health body said that a rise in cases of microcephaly - in which babies are born with an abnormally small head - was likely caused by the mosquito-borne virus, and declared the situation a "public health emergency of international concern".

First detected in Africa in 1947, Zika was considered a relatively mild disease until the current outbreak was declared in Latin America last year.

Brazil was the first country to sound the alarm on the apparent link with birth defects. It has since become the worst affected country, with some 4,000 suspected cases of microcephaly, of which 270 have been confirmed.

As alarm grows over the surge in the number of cases, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Jamaica and Puerto Rico have warned women to delay conceiving until the Zika outbreak is brought under control.

Your ignorance is shocking. SARS doesn't just kill outright it also leaves survivors with long term physical side effects including bone necrosis, and brain damage. The costs to the communities affected by SARS have been staggering. SARS killed lots of people but many more survived to lead severely compromised lives. Those who died were the lucky ones.

Zika on the other hand has no effect on 80% on those infected. The only people at risk are pregnant women and the link to Zika has still not been proven. Besides it is quite possible to have a retarded kid even without being infected by Zika so the disease itself has minimal affect in the overall scheme of things.

Statistics have shown that 50% of all children are born with below average intelligence so even without Zika the probability of having a subnormal kid is 50%.

I honestly don't understand what the fuss is regarding Zika. It's a very minor disease which is hardly ever fatal. It is linked to babies with small heads but there are loads of babies born with funny shaped heads on a daily basis and this has been happening since the dawn of time.

Take the Hainanese for example they all have extremely flat heads and most are retards too but nobody has made a big issue out of this genetic defect so why the hoopla over Zika??

(NaturalNews) GMO skeptics like myself have been warning for years of the unintended consequences of genetic pollution. The Zika virus, now spreading with unbridled ferocity, appears to have been caused by the release of genetically engineered mosquitoes that scientists hoped would sharply reduce malaria infections.

"The Zika virus outbreak currently gripping the Americas could have been sparked by the release of genetically modified mosquitoes in 2012," reports The Mirror. "The insects were engineered by biotechnology experts to combat the spread of dengue fever and other diseases and released into the general population of Brazil in 2012... The Aedes aegypti mosquito sub-species that carries both the Zika virus and dengue was the type targeted with genetically modified mosquitoes."

But something went horribly wrong.

As pointed out in this fantastic article by AntiMedia.org, the genetic engineers running this massive open-air experiment with mosquitoes and humans failed to consider the impact of antibiotics in the environment caused by their heavy use in agricultural (animal feed) operations.

The presence of antibiotics causes the mosquitoes that are supposed to die off to survive and reproduce. These same genetically engineered mosquitoes may then bite humans, injecting them with the Zika virus that's now causing horrific mutations in head and brain formation in children.

The Zika virus, in other words, might not even be an accident. If you give these scientists the most optimistic credit possible, you might say they intended for a positive outcome but didn't realize the risks of what they were doing. But a more pessimistic analysis of their actions might reasonably conclude that they're testing a bioweapon delivery system against humanity.

Only time will tell which interpretation is correct. Whatever the outcome, make no mistake that today's biotech science is incredibly foolish, and the actions of these biotech corporations are putting the very future of humanity at extreme risk.
