The Air Transport Rating Agency (ATRA) has published its second annual list of the world’s ten safest airlines. The Geneva-based operation based its list on an assessment of 15 factors, using 2010 data.

SIA has not made it into the top 10 again. This year, its greatest rival, Qantas, made it into the top 10.

ATRA’s ten safest airlines (in alphabetical order only):

Air Canada
Air France-KLM
AMR Corporation
Delta Airlines
International Airlines Group
Lufthansa
Qantas
Southwest Airlines
United-Continental
US Airways

But as the Economist’s travel blog points out:

Only one of the ten airlines in ATRA’s list (Qantas) makes it into the top ten of the most recent Skytrax world airline awards, which are derived from over 18m passenger responses and have a much more Middle Eastern/Asian tone. This either suggests that passengers do not consider safety when naming their favourite carriers, or they disagree with ATRA’s particular emphasis.

Noticed a lot of retail outlets popping out in our terminals. Another SMRT in the making?

Surprised Qantas made it to any list other than "dangerous" and "lousy" list with their spate of engineering problems and sub standard service.

I am surprised Air-France KTM made the list - esp after the fatal concorde & B777 incident near Brazil.

seriously doubt their logic.

for Qantas who can forget their A380 engine dropped off over Indonesia resulting in them grounding their A380 for nearly a year?

The only one probably deserve mentioning = Lufthansa.

Tio lah. SQ sure beats the American airlines in terms of service. Even the Americans say so themselves

Didn't the SIA have a few runway near-collision incidents?
And don't forget the engine problems of the A380.

Oops, there goes your precious little safety ranking.

Here's one of the minor accidents in 2007.

ok - I think Qantas can be absolved by this definition but definitely not Air France. Neither is United - 911.

SIA's safety standards, if based solely on number of incidents or technical issues, no matter how minor, has certainly dropped. Though not as much as their service standards...

However, I find it extremely laughable that Qantas is ranked above SIA!

they can say and survey what they like but everyone in the industry knows that firstly, passengers who fly the STAR ALLIANCE routes will always want to fly SIA whenever they can. Secondly most passengers also prefer to fly SIA if the price differential is narrowed down eg when there is some kind of SIA fare promotion.
