SINGAPORE: The police said no further action will be taken against British author Alan Shadrake following investigations against him for criminal defamation.
A police statement said the Attorney-General has reviewed the investigation papers and concluded that although the investigation discloses the commission of several counts of criminal defamation, these arise essentially out of the same matrix of facts that had been considered in the recently concluded proceedings brought against Mr Shadrake for contempt of Court.
In view of this, police said the Attorney-General has directed that no further action be taken against Shadrake as there is no public interest in starting a further set of proceedings against him.
The 76-year-old author was sentenced in November last year to six weeks' jail and a fine of S$20,000 for contempt of court.
He was also ordered to fork out another S$55,000 in costs to the Attorney-General's Chambers.
He was found guilty of the offence due to eleven passages in his book, "Once a Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock."
They were found to have undermined the integrity of Singapore's judicial system.
