Trump

In April 2016, K Shanmugam told the UN to bugger off when asked to consider legalising drugs in Singapore. You can read about it here.
Shanmugam has done it again.
Earlier this week, Donald Trump, the US Republican Party’s nominee for the US presidential elections this year, had said in response to the recent shooting in a gay club in Orlando that claimed 49 lives that he would “suspend immigration from areas of the world where there’s a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe, or our allies.” Trump said that the ban would be in place until “we figure out what is going on.”
And just this evening, in the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims all around the world, Shanmugam once again showed that Singapore is not afraid to stand up and do the right thing.
In an indirect (but fairly obvious) reference to Trump, K Shanmugam schooled Trump for making anti-Muslim remarks and fanning anti-Islam fervour for political ends.
Take a look at some of his quotes below:
“There is political profit in dividing people, playing on race, religion, stoking up fears. (But this is) really unacceptable and, I think, morally reprehensible.”
“People in power or aspire to leadership should not do this.”
“Singapore has zero tolerance for people who make bigoted, divisive statements.”
“If anyone makes such statements here, the Internal Security Department will talk to him, and take action where necessary.”
“You burn the Koran or any other Holy Book, you go to jail. No two ways about it. The government will not allow it here and for us to continue to succeed, I think we’ll have to take that approach. protect everyone, don’t allow racial and religiously inflammatory remarks.”
Heard that Trump?
Those are pretty strong statements, but I think we should applaud Shanmugam and the government having the backbone to a firm stance against Islamophobia despite potentially incurring Trump’s wrath.
(Ok, actually not potentially, lah. He sure angry, cause he seems like the petty type.)
