SINGAPORE: Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said the range of views expressed about the 6.9 million population projection set out in the White Paper are completely understandable.

He was speaking to reporters at a hong bao presentation ceremony at his Chong Pang Division.

He said businesses are unhappy about the lack of growth in the labour force but there are also those who are concerned about the 6.9 million figure.

"They say 'I have difficulties with infrastructure, transport, housing with today's population and you want to increase it even more, doesn't make sense,' - that's a reaction and it is understandable.

"The government has got to explain two points. The first is we have to and will solve the current infrastructure problems and second for this long term planning, whatever the size of the population, 6.9 million is not the target, the infrastructure must be adequate and deliver high quality of life.

"That has to be a cast iron position that the government has to deliver and will deliver," he said.

I thought is a new addition of style to Kama Sutra.

Now that you mention it, it sounds more like a case of PAP saying "kami suka suka"

Re: Shanmmugam admits that there are current infrstructure problems. Look who's talki

to address the infrastructure problem, you load them with millions of more people?

Great idea, the Civil Defense should also put out fires with petrol. That'll work.

What is cast iron position ?
Cast iron is the cheapest method to manufacture iron products. It is also the weakest form of iron product as cast iron is more brittle and yet weaker than forged iron.

So he is telling the truth. Their position is brittle and weak. Cannot withstand pressure and scrutiny.

Please stick to your foreign affairs role. You suck at it already

He is stating the very obvious. Who in S'pore is not aware of infrastructure problems? MIW weren't ready for the 'extras' yet took them in. Poor planning.

Not so sure if he excels in foreign affairs. He should just stick to law.

He's average in law. Sucks at FA in my view.

My friends at MFA commented that the worst FA minister was WKS. They have been at MFA for the past 3 decades.

I don't remember the WKS period as MFA Minister. But certainly Shamu has done not inspirational. Just putting on his smile and hitting back at people. Watch the CSIS talk for eg--

So rude to the audience member asking about Singapore giving foreign aid.

Late 80s or early 90s I think. Imo, S Rajaratnam did well.

Let me give you guys some things to think about. Our MRT routes are single track per way.
SMRT likes to give incomplete bennchmark matrices. Below are the average weekday passenger ridership per kilometre of tracks.

13,045 passengers/weekday km (2001)
50,866 passenger/weekday km (2012)

That is a 389.9% increase in load on the entire track. Running a train on a track is banging, scratching and bending the tracks. You increase this by 389.9%. Not to mention the intensity is different for densely visited parts of Singapore. You tell me.
