'Nurse' who molested patient spared after compensating victim

SINGAPORE - A technical officer, who masqueraded as a nurse and molested a patient in a ward at Raffles Hospital, was given a discharge amounting to an acquittal in court yesterday after he compounded the offence.
The court was told that Sim Siang Heng had apologised to the victim and paid her $4,500 as compensation.
He could have been jailed up to two years or fined or caned or any combination of these.
On Jan 28, Sim, 40, wore a nurse's uniform and walked into a ward where a 28-year-old British flight attendant with Qantas Airways was, and touched her breasts.
About 10 minutes later, he entered a 31-year-old female patient's room.
After his arrest, Sim was remanded at the Institute of Mental Health. He was diagnosed with acute depression.
Besides outrage of modesty, Sim was charged with two counts of trespassing.
For entering into the flight attendant's room, he was given a stern warning and given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal.
For going into the 31-year-old patient's room, Sim was given a discharge amounting to an acquittal.
