SINGAPORE: Fire was seen coming out of a manhole that blew up at the junction of Hill Street and High Street Thursday morning (Apr 2). SP PowerGrid confirmed that a gas leak was detected.

A SP PowerGrid spokesperson said at about 3.30pm that it was alerted at 8.03am of a fire at Hill Street, and its emergency response team was immediately deployed to the site.

"The team detected a gas leak coming from the joint of a low-pressure pipe underground. The pipe is suspected to have been damaged. Our priority is to ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity, and the area has been cordoned off. We also immediately deployed additional crew to check on the other pipes in the area. Our officers are investigating the cause of the incident," the spokesperson said.

SP PowerGrid later said that its officers completed repairs on the affected gas pipe at around 4:45pm and a leak survey team will continue to monitor the area on Thursday night.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) had earlier said it was alerted to the incident at around 7.30am on Thursday. The SCDF said the fire was extinguished using a foam jet.

There were no casualties or injuries.

A section on the right-most lane of Hill Street was blocked off and SCDF resources were at the scene as a precautionary measure.

It's obvious the ghost of LKY couldn't rest in peace.

Why? The state funeral wasn't grand enough for his liking?

Other than the paid & official mourners that line the streets, queue to parliament house, to him, it was a disappointment. It was expected to line the streets from here to JB & some will tell you to Batam, but that didn't happen...:D
