very insuightful. these commentators analysis bears more credibility and more substance than the MIW esp that arrogant foreign ministar with a female sounding name. USA is passe and if Hilary is elected USA is doomed. so far the presidential election is all about sexism.

Translation: SGP is totally screwed by Cheena!!

Is Ah Loong dying he wants the entire nation to die with him?

Like some emperor in ancient China?

LKY did say that Spore couldn't survive & that is probably why he started his little family business to amass billions of $. So that his family would have $$$ when Spore Inc returned to being a fishing village.

In the future Spore will probably have to rejoin Malaya?

Theoretically, as per the video showed, China can use the various ports available along the belt to export and in the countries to process raw materials into goods before exporting to various parts of the world. To do that, China first have to invest heavily in all these countries including infrastructure, development and management of ports as well as counting on the population of these countries to be skilled enough and the countries to be politically stable enough. Considering China is also making inroads toward europe, it may be stretching itself too thin.

Further, China still has to answer to it's people what does doing all these externally, help their citizens, much like how US is having difficulties explaining to workers and it's people, the TPP and TTIP's benefits. How can China convince the Chinese that setting up factories overseas and diluting it's port business is good for the Chinese people and if it indeed is a good strategy. It is definitely good for the GLCs and crony corporations to get govt funding and expand externally to enrich themselves, but hardly benefit it's own population. F.E. right now, Chinese agricultural produce are already exported to these countries, Free-Trade deals will directly benefit these farmers, not helping to develop these countries. Countries which take over processing or manufacturing = less export for Chinese-based companies. If iPhones are assembled in Vietnam to serve ASEAN market, instead of now China supplying the whole world's market, how will that help in of China's manufacturing sector? Therefore theoretically, benefits to countries participating in the One-belt initiative seems massive, it ultimately have to depend on how much China decides to give these countries while these countries have to act to China's interest politically from now now, like Duterte.

Given that all these measures seem to be expanding and exerting China's political clout, countries in SEA, especially those in territorial disputes with China, would do well to beware of such FDI by Chinese firms and is it worth the short-term gain to forego the long-term sovereignty? Duterte is one such short-sighted leader who is trying to be seen as different, bold, daring but is a mere pawn in this political game. China will be quick to see that Pinoyland's willingness to switch allegiance even in the midst of territorial dispute, as one extremely unreliable partner.

Inevitably, SG's influence will wane. economy will decline with other countries' improving, it is indeed a zero-sum game when it comes to Asean's economy. Doom and gloom? Gloom, yes... Doom? Let's wait and see.... Preserve cash, you'all.. get out of illiquid assets.
