The Online Citizen courted its own “death”

Obviously the government is taking necessary steps to keep influential socio political sites in place.
When they (TOC) did the Face to Face conference, I knew that the authorities will come in.
Its one thing to be blogging online but another to step forward and try to unite all the opposition parties openly with a mass gathering.
They won’t allow this to happen undeterred as its a threat to their political survival – they are not stupid.
They won’t want the same thing to happen to them as it had in Malaysia whereby bloggers almost brought UMNO down.
Funding wise, there should be some issue here. I believe they may have some funding from overseas which is not unusual.
When you starve an organisation of their funding, you squeeze out their survival.
Looking at how things turn out here, its quite true that TOC may have hit the dirt for good.
They also will not be able to use their platform to feature or report on any opposition party – that means they will not be involved in the GE anymore.
If they don’t comply, MDA will use fines to force them out or even a site shutdown. Its almost a final nail down TOC’s coffin.
The same thing happened in China whereby political bloggers constantly face site shutdown by the authorities. They could not be tracked down and subsequently re-establish their sites somewhere else.
I believe TOC could not do this as they are open about their operations and the authorities can track them down easily.
What perhaps they can do now is to re-establish another covert editorial team and let them run underground. This way, they can publish articles undeterred – like what TR has cleverly done.
I am glad that TR has remain anonymous else the same thing will happen. If TR’s guys are visible like TOC’s team, they will be issued the same stuff few months back.
Looks like TR is doing the right thing and may even be the ONLY true socio political site remaining for Singaporeans.
Take care and keep up the good work wherever you TR guys are – its a black day for Singapore nevertheless.
