She was only seven years old when her father raped her.

In his defence, the 42-year-old man pleaded that he had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of his offence. He apologised and asked for a chance to "become a responsibile human being for myself and my family." He did it only once, he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, he was sentenced to 11 years jail and given 16 strokes of the cane.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sabrina Choo disregarded intoxication as a mitigating factor. She said the rape had been committed by the very man who was supposed to protect and care for the child.

The man had previous convictions. He was last sentenced to three years and six months’ jail in October 2002 for consuming a controlled drug.

Instituting death penalty for child rapists would only leads to some mothers forcing their daughters to remain silent in order to spare the life of the rapist father.

Ironically it would therefore lead to less justice served, not more justice.

The current system however needs to be tweaked. There should be a minimum 12 strokes of rotan and 15 years jail for child rapists. 11 years jail for raping a child is a fucking sick joke. People have gotten 11 years for crimes of far lesser depravity.

The punishment for rape and especially incest should be MANDATORY CASTRATION. Jail terms and caning require expenditure from tax payers in the form of maintaining , providing staff for prisons, employing professionals to cane, feeding prisoners etc. Castration of rapist turn them into immediate Eunuchs who can't rape anymore.

According to report in ST dated 25 Jan 2011, "the man, who did not have a lawyer, pleaded through a Malay interpreter to be given a final chance so that he can become a more responsible human being".

This was what I mentioned in another thread about the drug courier who was 19 years old when he was apprehended bringing dangerous drugs into Singapore. There are worse crimes than what Vui Kong did, and this is a good example. Raping one's own daughter is an act of an animal, not a human.

MOSCOW - THE man who has emerged as the initial suspect over the suicide bombing at Moscow Domodedovo airport lived in south Russia and was converted to Islam by an ethnic Russian imam, a report said on Friday.

Police reportedly honed in on Vitaly Razdobudko after connecting him with Islamist militant group Nogaisky Dzhamaat and a Dec 31 blast in Moscow where a would-be female suicide bomber accidentally blew herself up.

Investigators said Razdobudko has been missing from his apartment in the southern resort town of Pyatigorsk in the Stavropol region since last November along with his wife and a newborn baby.

Razdobudko, 32, converted from Christianity and adopted Islam when he was a student in the local technical university. He was formally converted by a local imam in Pyatigorsk, a Russian named Anton Stepanenko, the report said.

Stepanenko, whose Muslim name is Abdullah, was convicted of holding a man captive in 2006, and police found Wahhabist literature, audio and video materials, as well as a manual on explosives, in his home.

Although police connected Stepanenko and his followers with a number of attacks he received a suspended sentence and vanished from Pyatigorsk. -- AFP
