Seven teens arrested for shoplifting

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested seven males, aged between 15 and 18, believed to be involved in a series of shoplifting cases islandwide.
In a news release issued on Wednesday (Sep 3), the police said they received a report on Aug 11 that electronic appliances were missing and suspected to be stolen from an electronics store in Changi Airport.
Following an investigation by officers from the Airport Police Division, aided by security cameras within the airport, the seven suspects were arrested on Aug 28, the release said. An assortment of items, including video cameras, headphones and other popular branded gadgets, that were believed to be stolen were recovered from the suspects.
Investigations indicate that the suspects worked in groups, with some acting as look-outs and distracting the sales staff while others committed the thefts. They were believed to have cut wires securing some of the items, and also sold some of the stolen items online, the police said.
Investigations against the suspects are on-going to establish their involvement in several other similar cases island-wide, the police added. The offence of shop theft is punishable with a jail term of up to seven years and a fine. - CNA/cy
