Serviceman sorry over FB post, SAF probe begins

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) said that it does not condone the behaviour of a serviceman who made a recent Facebook post saying "the only good thing" about his job is that he can vent his anger on recruits.

A post on the Defence Ministry's cyberpioneer Facebook page yesterday said that the sergeant involved has expressed remorse over his post.

It said: "Our leaders are expected to embody the SAF core values, which include exemplary leadership, strong ethics and care for soldiers."

An investigation has been initiated and the serviceman will be disciplined if necessary, added the post.

A screengrab of the serviceman's post was posted on citizen-journalism website Stomp on Sunday. In the post, the serviceman also said that "nobody really cares" about what he does.

The Stomp post has since amassed nearly 130 comments, including one by contributor heartbeat55, which said: "This is no laughing matter and involves many Singaporeans' sons."

typical sinkie serviceman. cowards that only know how to abuse his positions and abuse recruits. come war time and these @ssholes would be first to run away. real coward b@stards and that's why I do not respect SAF and all the arm chair generals. full of bullies in SAF from personal experience

SAF does not condone their people from speaking the truth? Or expressing their feelings? It is Facebooks' pages he is writing on, not Pioneer magazine. Got too much time it looks more like that.

I have a colleague who regards cleaning rifle as "siong"! Singaporeans aren't meant to be soldiers. Most are technicians, brokers, salesmen, white-collared office workers. Even nursing is more physically challenging than what most male Singaporeans can handle.

Sam, "training" should not be seen as "torturing." Just because the average male Singaporean is soft, cissified and unable to stomach rugged life does not make training that bad. Officers and NCOs assigned to instruct recruits and other trainees are merely carrying out their duties, many stories of sadistic superiors are over exaggerated.
