South Australian federal politician Mary Jo Fisher has been charged with allegedly stealing groceries from a supermarket and assaulting a security guard who apprehended her.
The Liberal politician could face the loss of her Senate position if she is convicted of either charge, Adelaide Now reports
Senator Fisher, who in March attracted national prominence when she mocked Prime Minister Julia Gillard's proposed carbon tax with a dance routine in the Upper House, will stand trial in September.
She has been charged with one count of dishonestly taking property without the owner's consent and one count of assault.
She will contest the charges in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.
The alleged offence happened on December 15 last year.
The police apprehension report into the incident alleges that Senator Fisher allegedly took foodstuff valued at $92.92 (RM300) from a Foodland supermarket in the Adelaide suburb of Frewville.
She is further alleged to have assaulted a female security guard in the supermarket carpark when the guard sought to stop her from leaving.
In a statement Saturday Senator Fisher said she rejected the charges "and will vigorously defend them".
"As I will be contesting the matters, I will not be making any further comment."
Senator Fisher has been a senator for South Australia since being elected to the seat in 2007 following the resignation of Amanda Vanstone.
