On what was supposed to be the 17th day of the trial, Wong’s lawyer, Ms Melanie Ho, told District Judge John Ng that her client has decided “to take a certain course” for “personal and other reasons”.
“Over the last few months and after an evaluation of the evidence, we have been in discussion with the prosecution. Our client has decided to take a certain course. That includes the withdrawal of several allegations made in the earlier charges,” Ms Ho said.
The trial, which last took place in court in November, has now been adjourned due to the development.
Wong, who currently faces 54 charges of corruption, will return to court on March 11 with Chia Sin Lan, the director of 19-ANC Enterprise and 19-NS2 Enterprise.
Chia is accused of giving Wong, 58, kickbacks amounting to about S$107,000 to advance the business interests of his two firms. The companies handle general building, repairs and redecoration works for town councils, including AMKTC.
Chia, 63, currently still intends to claim trial to his 54 charges and remains out on $200,000 bail, while Wong is on S$100,000 bail.
Wong was a former employee of CPG Facilities Management, the managing agent of the town council that serves the Ang Mo Kio public housing estate.
TODAY understands that the prosecution is intending to withdraw 22 charges against Wong, mostly relating to entertainment expenses such as KTV sessions.
The remaining 32 charges relate to:
Day 1: Ang Mo Kio Town Council ex-general manager flip-flopped on statements to CPIB
Day 2: KTV, other entertainment expenses formed bulk of alleged payments to former GM of AMK Town Council
Day 3: Man who allegedly bribed former AMK Town Council GM answered questions to make CPIB investigator happy: Defence
Day 4: Man accused of bribing former AMK Town Council’s GM had asked business partner to destroy receipts
Day 5: Man accused of bribing former AMK Town Council’s GM spent over S$4,000 for KTV session, says business partner
Day 6: Man accused of bribing former AMK Town Council’s GM asked business partner to apply for debit card to hide affairs
Day 7: Corruption trial: Boss of firm had to find work for former town council GM’s daughter-in-law at two offices
Day 8: AMKTC corruption trial: Business partner disturbed by ‘dirty’ and ‘very scary’ dealings
Day 9: AMKTC corruption trial: Man accused of bribing former GM threatened to report business partner to CPIB
