[h=2]SDP to launch alternative paper on population[/h]
February 11th, 2013 | Author: YourSDP

In keeping with our objective to offer Singaporeans an alternative platform, the Singapore Democrats will present our policy paper on immigration and population for our country.

There has been intense anger on the part of Singaporeans since the launching of the Government White Paper, A Sustainable Population for a Dynamic Singapore, in which it was announced that the PAP would increase the population to 6.9 million by 2030.

Last week, however, the paper was amended to reflect that 6.9 million is not a target, but rather a planning parameter.

As it is, Singaporeans are already feeling the pressure of 5.3 million that we have presently. Housing prices, public transport and availability of jobs have been adversely affected. Social tension has increased and Singaporeans are showing signs of increased stress.

Even with the amendment, there are still many questions that abound: Is the current population increase rate healthy for the country? How do we handle questions of national security? How can we encourage Singaporeans to procreate under such a stressful environment.

The SDP’s alternative paper will identify the problems emanating from the PAP’s policy of suddenly pushing up the population in such massive numbers and, more importantly, provide a detailed and comprehensive set of measures that will keep the Singaporean people economically and socially secure.

The launch of the paper will take place at the Bras Basah Complex on 14 February 2013 at 7:00pm. Singaporeans are encouraged to attend as the matter affects them and their future directly and in significant ways.

Last year, the SDP launched two major papers on healthcare (The SDP National Healthcare Plan: A Caring) and housing (Housing A Nation: Holistic Policies for Affordable Homes). This paper will be the third in a series of major policy papers presented by the party.
