6. Improve diplomacy and foreign relations

In order for Singapore to reduce the chances of armed conflict with other countries, we need to improve our foreign relations and diplomatic skills. The recent revelations by Wikileaks where our senior diplomatic officials made disparaging remarks against our closest neighbours are not the way forward.

We must embark on an enlightened foreign policy approach where we work with our ASEAN neighbours instead of treating them with disdain. Instead of practising one-upmanship, a new approach must be adopted. This should include signing treatises and conducting military exercises with the ultimate aim of forming a regional defence force.

Such a move will also address the problem of discrimination against Singaporeans who are Malay-Muslims. Building up trust and confidence with our Malay-Muslim neighbours in areas of military defence will eliminate this problem as we work towards a peaceful and friendly co-existence instead of the suspicious and hostile atmosphere that currently exists.

Such an approach will also help us reduce our defence budget which is more than $11 billion, or 25 percent of our national budget. A reduction in military spending will allow us to divert more resources to other areas such as healthcare and other aid for the elderly and poor.

Is this possible? Can Singapore be Switzerland?

Is this possible? Can Singapore be Switzerland?

It already exceeds Switzerland when it comes to private banking and being a hub for dubious people to park their money.

The PAP will not slash defense budget, because it directly enriches its cronies. The money that changes hands in military-related deals makes AIM software, YOG expenditure and Brompton bikes look like mere spare change.

But lets consider SDP's foreign policy. Is it achievable or just an extreme?

It's a looney idea from idiotic left wing libertarians who don't have a clue how the real world works.

In all seriousness, SDP needs to work really hard to win over the hearts of the people. Under the watch of Chee Soon Juan, the SDP have been viewed as a joke and constantly repressed by the government due to their brash overtly challenging style. Mr Chee has been drifting for something like twenty years already, he has to realise his approach is not working, even with the government being increasingly less popular.

I believe WP sums it best, serve your constituents with all your heart, give useful comments in improving government policies, which is mainly working with the PAP till they at least lose their majority in parliament. ^^Part2, apparently got 500 char cap for moderated posts.

Chee thinks he can turn Singapore into a Switzerland or even Liechtenstein. Is that possible?

SDP is nothing but just another singkie party full of meat eaters. PERIOD.

The author of those paragraphs have no understanding at all of Singapore's history and how politics in the region work. Want to be a pacifist and hope Malaysia and Indonesia reciprocate? They'll encircle you slowly and eat you alive when you've lowered your guard.

First get an understanding of geography and geopolitics. Singapore is a republic that rests of a knife's edge. Our strategic location brings us great advantage as well as great envy. There was a time when our prosperity was deemed to undermine the national security of our neighbours. Since they have concluded we cannot be subdued, the next logical alternative is to attempt to control and wage a cold war of undermining strategic interests whenever politically advantageous. Both sides are always preparing to use Singapore as a strategic pawn in event a conflict breaks out with the other side. That has been the way for decades.

The only things keeping everyone in check and maintaining the delicate balance of power in the region is American naval power coupled with Singapore's defence capabilities. You want to cut defence spending by half? ARE YOU SURE?

Bro, you mean like last time the Lanpafang Republic? OK noted.

Have to admit Boss sam is right with his statement. However NS under its current system is not working either as its there to ensure the high ranking officers have a job and the civil serpents too. Also what about those leech industries like SFI and ST etc who depend on SAF contracts?

It's a looney idea from idiotic left wing libertarians who don't have a clue how the real world works.

SDP aim is to get the armed forces to be reduced to the strength of New Zealand--no combat capability and the size of the Vatican Guard.

singapore needs to be baptised by fire to move up another level. with all those million$ goondus and half-nitwits in charge, sgp is like suspended in time.

if u look around us today, there is the invasion of the PRCs with their primitive horrendous habits like spitting, chopeing, loudmouthing and all those sickening habits that put sgp way way in the reversed gear.

with the import of the bangala, indians and the likes, we don't need to savour curries any more. the smell enamated from them is enough to switch one off the curries :(

sdp is infested with mostly whore attention seekers who like the attention more than the real urge to better the life of singaporeans.

pagan messiah chee loves such kind of people cos it'd be easier for him to apply his mind controlling skills over them.

I pity Chee for all the mess he got himself into but this leftist view is making him unelectable.

chee has no rightist nor leftist. he's just bent on taking revenge against the pappies especially lau goh n lau lee for publicly shaming and exposing him as a fraudster and causing him to be ungraciously sacked fr his one elitist post of NUS lecturer.

the hated and vengeance can hardly be quenched cos the humiliation continues that causes chee to lose his maternal landed property home which was bequeathed to him. not only that,he was condemned into bankruptcy until not long ago he was freed.

why the pap freed him and who was backing him with the amount to set him free is the real poser and mystery that need to be solved if voters were to accept chee wholeheartedly as a "sincere" politician.

No doubt the SAF is too large. But is it logical to reduce it to the minute size SDP wants? Can there really be a peaceful, happy, no conflict foreign policy as SDP described?

No need SAF la...
No sinkieland flooded with so many tiongs and ah neh....indo and malaysia want to find trouble just SOS PRC or India la.
