Ang Yong Guan

Dr Ang Yong Guan graduated from the University of Singapore in 1979 with a medical degree. He did his post-graduate training in psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh from 1984 to 1986.

Upon his return from Edinburgh, he served as a psychiatrist with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) for 17 years from 1986 to 2003 before retiring as a Colonel in 2003 as Head, Psychological Care Centre at the Military Medicine Institute, SAF Medical Corps.

Dr Ang is currently in private practice as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Paragon Medical. He was the President of the Singapore Psychiatric Association for two consecutive terms in 1997 and 1998 and Chairman of the Chapter of Psychiatrists, Academy of Medicine from 2001 to 2003.

He is the founding and current Chairman of the Action Group for Mental Illness (AGMI), a non-profit organisiation advocacy group championing for persons with mental illness, formed in October 2004.

He is a member of National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), set up by Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports (MCYS) since its formation in 2005.

He is also a member of the Clinical Advisory Committee for Chronic Disease Management Programme on Mental Illness under Ministry of Health since 2009. He has been a Special Visitor for the Mental Capacity Act under the MCYS from February 2010 and a Member to the Visitor’s Board under the Mental Health (Care & Treatment) Act 2008, Ministry of Health from August 2010.

He was awarded the Public Service Medal (PBM) in 1995 for his contribution in community work and the Public Administration Medal (PPA) in 1996 for his service in the SAF.

He has always been interested in politics and in helping the community. He was an active grassroots leader; having previously served as Chairman of the Management Committee of Punggol Community Club, and Secretary of the Kampong Kembangan Citizens' Consultative Committee (CCC).

He believes that getting involved in politics is a way of serving the community and the nation. As a psychiatrist, he will use his expertise to scrutinise policies in Parliament which have an impact on the stress level and well-being of Singaporeans; thus ensuring that we are not only a First World nation economically but emotionally as well.

Mohd Isa Abdul Aziz

Mr Mohd Isa Abdul Aziz has held various positions within the civil service and statutory boards. He later set up his own business before he was headhunted by Bruneian and Australian companies within the oil and gas industry. He is currently Business Development Manager for an Australian Oil and Gas company.

Mr Mohd Isa is a member of the Central Executive Committee of the SDP and has been with the party since its early days.

Sadasivam Veriyah

Sadasivam Veriyah is an ex-teacher and a unionist. He has attained Cert in Education (Tamil) from Teachers Training College in Singapore for teaching in 1972. He has also attained specialist training in the teaching of Physical Education. He taught in various Primary and Secondary Schools and has been a Sports Secretary of a School.

During his teaching days, he was Secretary and the President of the Singapore Tamil Teachers Union. He has also served in the Grassroots Organization of Ayer Rajah Constituency in various capacities under the respectable MP Dr. Tan Cheng Bock. He had also actively participated in the activities of various civic organizations in the promotion of their goals.

He joined the PAP in the early 80’s. Unfortunately, the aspirations of the PAP changed drastically. He feels that the feelings and frustrations of his fellow Singaporeans are not effectively heard in the Parliament and the Government has become highly insensitive to the aspirations and hardship of the people.

Gerald Sng Choon Guan

gerald-sng.jpg

Gerald Sng is the Treasurer of the Singapore Democratic Party. He has been active in politics since 1999. Gerald is passionate about opposition work because he has seen how people are disadvantaged by 50 years of PAP rule.

He is proud to be associated with the SDP because of the spirit of service and sincerity he sees in its members and supporters. He is especially happy that the SDP candidates are pledging 50% of their MP allowance to help serve the community.

Tan Jee Say

Tan Jee Say is an investment adviser. He has worked in international banks and asset management institutions such as Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, Govett Asset Management and Standard Chartered Bank, for more than 16 years, and held positions as managing director and regional head of Asia Pacific operations.

Prior to joining the financial sector, he was with the Administrative Service for 11 years, including 6 years in the Ministry of Trade and Industry and 5 years as the Principal Private Secretary to then Deputy Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong.

Mr. Tan is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment, and has an Islamic Finance Qualification jointly awarded by the Chartered Institute and ESA of Lebanon. He graduated from Oxford University where he studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics on a Singapore Government Overseas Merit Scholarship.

Mr Tan came to prominence recently when he wrote a detailed 46-page paper this February entitled, Creating Jobs and Enterprise in a New Singapore Economy - Ideas for Change.

The paper has received the endorsement of Lord Butler, former Head of the British Civil Service in the 1980s and 1990s: "It seems to me a thorough and well-argued piece of work and as such it deserves the attention of policy-makers."

very interesting to see how SDP will fare this election, will they poll close to the oppo popular vote, not that poor from last GE.

SDP has high calibre candidates but CSJ and party still unpopular among the electorate? voters do chose parties regardless of candidates.

Notice how the 147th simply stated that Tan Jee Say is an aide to GCT, and not PPS to GCT? Trying very hard to downplay his credentials.

There are many who dislike CSJ, but I think for other SDP candidates who are standing for elections, we should not dismiss them too fast for they are after all not CSJ. They have their own attitude, wealth of experience and competencies as backing to stand against the ruling party. If we could give other opposition party candidates a chance, we should also consider giving these SDP candidates a chance to serve for 5 yrs and observe. They are after all part of the opposition group fighting for the people. We need a good number of opposition in parliament to make the ruling party shit pants. If we fail to do that, the next five years will be unimaginable because they will be emboldened to be more unfeeling and arrogant.

Indeed. Frankly, not very comfortable with Tan's connection with the PAPies. Maybe I am cynical but seeing what happened to RP with the 2 ex-scholars, I worry for SDP.
