The third reason for SDP’s bizarre behaviour is the knowledge that they need the help of WP to win the by-election.SDP know how popular WP are, especially in the north-eastern part of Singapore. More to the point, SDP know they are not popular enough (nor do they have enough resources – the money factor just discussed) to win the by-election on their own. They have to ride on the popularity of WP.
The opposition have always sniffed at the concept of the Group Representation Constituency, that it allows weak PAP candidates to enter Parliament “under the skirt of ministers”. Ironically this is exactly what SDP is trying to do, to enter Parliament under the skirt of WP.
