SINGAPORE: The new school year has seen fares for school buses go up by as much as 20 per cent following the 2008 ruling which required all small sized buses to be equipped with seatbelts by 2011.

But one parent who contacted MediaCorp but declined to be named, said her child did not have a seat with seatbelt despite the price hike.

"They raised the price by S$15 this year, because of the seatbelts.

"But my child and the little girl sitting beside her do not have belts (on their bus seats). My (child) is the active type, so I'm quite worried.

"When I complained to the driver, he said he can't change their seats because he has an extra (child) on the bus.

"When I insisted, he said that if I want to change, they will have to cancel the fees we paid this month".

Singapore School Transport Association chairman Wong Ann Lin said: "Every child in a small school bus has to wear a seatbelt.

"It's against the rules when the seat does not have a seatbelt, and if the child does not belt up".

When contacted, the school told Channel NewsAsia that the bus was carrying one more student as a temporary measure, because its bus operator had lost one driver recently.

Very strange that the kids are "suppose" to wear seat belts while they don't need to on public buses or on the MRT:confused:

Some MRT carriages don't even have seats:eek:

Two Laws for Singaporeans .
One is for taxation the other is to make your life miserable .

Only SMRT and TIBS exempted from this government tekan exercise .

i heard this complaint from a pte bus aunty many years ago as well. why no standing passengers allowed on pte bus but ok for sbs & smrt bus? smrt n sbs bus safer??

This is bullshit, there are many school buses with no seat belt. Especially buses of popular schools as they carry a lot more students.

I think there is actually only one type of taxation, the ones that make them $$$ & when they take our $$$ we become miserable because we know they are "stealing" from us Leegally:rolleyes:

Not sure about the time frame but LTA has mandated and therefore it is compulsory for school buses/vans to have seat belts.

It is important for us to view things in prespective.
Yes there is a difference between so called private buses and public buses.
Of course LTA can mandate that all public buses must be equipped with seat belts and no standing passengers are allowed.
Question is do you really want it?
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell u that the bus fares will have to rise substantially in this case.

.......

How come pte buses deserve special attention:confused:

Have they actually got proof that pte buses are more prone to having accidents:confused:

Spore is getting very bureaucratic & alot of the rules & regulations are costing us $$$. Suspect that this is one of those laws.

So, is LTA doing what it is paid by checking onthe buses to ensure this?

yes, of course, there are mandatory inspections as with all vehicles in Sinkapore.
Recently there are also a lot of safety regulations concerning the transport of foreign workers on lorries....
TP have also been conduction spot checks in Jurong/Tuas areas.

Safety issues apart, it is but another money-making exercise for all those with vested interests! That is also one reason why more people prefer to stay single or if they are married, not to have too many children unless costs is not an issue. My vote for Sinkapore as the most expensive city in another 5 years' time.:D

Then why my nephew school buses got no seatbelt?

hahaha...the law says you cannot do many things.....but you still do right.
I am telling you the priciples and I will entertain you one more time with all seriousness:

1. I say there is a time frame, I don't what is the time frame.
2. Assuming it is compulsory now, then the bus owner is breaking a law.

Pse don't ask me why the bus owner is breaking the law; etc.....and excuse me i have to take my medicine......
