Satay businessman out on bail
By Elena Chong
A DISTRICT judge rejected the prosecution's application to remand a satay businessman further to complete psychiatric assessment and granted him bail instead.
Mohamed Raffi Bashri Ahmed's case came up for mention on Tuesday after he had been accused of disorderly behaviour and abusing police officers along Lorong 108 Changi Road on March 7.
The 49-year-old - of the renowned Jalilah's Sate Solo business - was said to be suffering from bipolar disorder, a form of mental illness.
But his lawyer, Mr M. Ravi, denied this and objected to the prosecution's application to remand him for another week.
Following intervention from District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan, bail of $8,000 was granted.
The judge made his decision not to renew the order to remand him at Institute of Mental Health after hearing the parties' submissions and speaking to Raffi.
Raffi is out on bail. A pre-trial conference has been scheduled for April 20.
