In the spirit of yesterday's 100th anniversary of the start of WWI and the apocryphal bullet-in-the-Bible tales so redolent of the Great War, today we bring you the 21st-century equivalent.
Instead of a holy book stopping shrapnel or bullets, though, the word of God has been replaced with a Samsung cell phone.
Last night in Hsinchu, Taiwan, a row at a snack stand that started innocently enough when a man surnamed Hsu picked up a wallet from an adjacent table and said, "Whose is this? You're buying everyone a beer!" escalated quickly. Hsu exchanged blows with neighbor Mr Han before they both retreated for a re-match.
Han returned to the snack stand with a knife in wait for his adversary, but little did he know he was bringing a knife to a gun fight. From a distance of 2.3 meters, Hsu fired into Han's chest and fled the scene.
After Han was found by friends and taken to the hospital, they discovered that the bullet had actually been stopped in its tracks by a Samsung Mega 6.3 in his left breast pocket, saving his life. Mr Hsu turned himself into police the next morning and luckily for him as well, need not face homicide charges that could result in a death penalty.
While Samsung was saving lives in Taiwan, however, Apple was on a march of death in Xinjiang. On the same day, an 18-year-old Hui girl in Urumqi named Wu Wenyuan was electrocuted to death as she lay on her bed, the result of an electrical leak from her iPhone 4S as it was charging on the headboard.
