Dolphin dies after leaping from pool

The Yomiuri Shimbun

NAGOYA--A female dolphin died during rehearsals for an aquarium show after jumping out of a pool, the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium said Sunday.

According to the aquarium, the accident happened at about 2 p.m. Saturday. Sara, a Pacific white-sided dolphin thought to be about 17 years old, jumped about six to eight meters above the water surface, flew through the air in an arc and landed chest-first on a concrete floor.

The pool was 60 meters long, 30 meters wide and 12 meters deep.

Sara was 2.11 meters long and weighed 106 kilograms. She had been kept at the aquarium since December 2008 after being caught off Taijicho, Wakayama Prefecture.

RWS: Marine parks contribute to conservation
On the two dolphins bought by RWS that died in Langkawi last October from a bacterial infection Ms Boo said that RWS does not 'take death, or even illnesses, of our animals lightly.' -- PHOTO: MARINE LIFE PARK

IN RESPONSE to a Sunday Times article last week (May 29), Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) sent in a reply to The Straits Times Forum 'expressing its commitment to animal welfare.'

The article in question was an appeal from animal activist Ric O'Barry, better known for his documentary The Cove which exposed the dolphin trade in Japan. Mr O'Barry had asked that the dolphins be released into the wild and offered his services in ensuring a smooth transition back to their natural habitat.

The email defended RWS' decision to showcase the remaining 25 wild-caught dolphins as one of the attractions at its Marine Life Park slated to open by end 2011, following the deaths of two dolphins last year.

'Established parks are an important generator of long-term, structured and sustained efforts to advance marine mammal science, which range from field research and water quality studies, to reproduction and physiology, as well as rescue rehabilitation. The Marine Life Park is designed to exceed international standards for animal care and welfare, and is working towards international accreditation in those areas,' wrote Ms Krist Boo, RWS's head of communications.

On the two dolphins bought by RWS that died in Langkawi last October from a bacterial infection Ms Boo said that RWS does not 'take death, or even illnesses, of our animals lightly.'

'We were deeply saddened by the loss of two dolphins to a water and air-borne bacterial infection last year. No medical expense or effort was spared but we could not save them,' added Ms Boo.

Sound like PAP standard reply. It is an honest mistake and let's move on kind of reply "template".:oIo:

hi there

1. another load of crap from some elites!
2. it is just moneytalk man.

honestly, would you visit the so call Waterworld / Aquarium if there are no dolphins / killer whales / whale sharks - or something of attraction?

There are dime a dozen aqaurium around the world. People are drawn to Osaka aquarium because of its giant tank containing whale shark (in fact it is now dwarfed by the one in Okinawa).

Look at Underwater World in Sentosa, what is there to draw visitors? What is the differentiating point? We have the pink dolphins at Dolphin World (not sure if it is still there) ...also drew flak from Animal Conservation Groups - but are there similar opposition for Hong Kong Ocean park (where there are also dolphins?) How about Las Vegas, there are also aqaurium with dolphin / ocras...they are still operating right?

My point is, these criticisms, they must be also applied to the Western world...

Sadly for RWS,without these dolphins / whale sharks, they won't have any way of drawing crowds...they are going to be one of the aquarium, a mere statistic.

KNN rich people can take a cruise holiday and see whales and dophines in the wild. Only way for us ordinary wage earners is to watch these animals on television or live in cages and man-made pool. And even then some of these people want to deprive us of this simple pleasure.

We must thank the Government for being so considerate to bring these attractions to our door step at affordable price for us ordinary citizens. Those who think that fish ought to go free and swim in the sea should not eat fish at all - fishhead curry or fishhead meehoon or sushi.
