The Reform Party (RP) has called on the government to be 憄rudent?in its policy implementation, especially on 損olicies that unduly increase the tax burden of Singaporeans.?/P> In a well-thought article published on votingrp.wordpress.com, RP election candidate Tony Tan Lay Thiam criticized the government for its untimely increase of GST to 7 percent and its failure to enhance the social safety net for needy and vulnerable Singaporeans.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had famously proclaimed that the GST hike was necessary to 慼elp the poor? However, according to Tony抯 analysis, the 揺xpenditure on other programmes: Workfare, GST Credit and Senior Citizen Bonus to enhance social safety net continue to lag behind the significant gain in GST revenue collected.?/P> Only $699 million dollars were spent on Workfare, GST credit and Senior Citizen bonus while $1903 million dollars of GST revenue were collected.
The cost of living has increased considerably since 2007 with inflation reaching a record high of 3.8 percent in November.
Though Singapore is a First World country, Singaporeans do not enjoy the social welfare benefits of one. There is a lack of a comprehensive social safety net and Singaporeans are expected to work for as long as possible till they drop dead and die.
With rumors circulating around that GST may be increased to 10 percent after the next election, the Reform Party urged the government 搕o be upfront about whether they would continue to increase the tax burden on Singaporeans after the General Election; this includes possible hike in GST, ERP and other government taxes and services.?/P> Read Tony抯 full article here.
