Robber gets jail, cane for stealing laptop and robbing
By Elena Chong
AN UNEMPLOYED man was sentenced to four years' and 12 strokes of the cane on Thursday for theft of a laptop and robbery.
Abusali S.K. Pakir Mydin, 31, admitted to stealing a $3,968 laptop from his nephew, 20-year-old student Nor Azmi Mohamad Azlan, at the latter's home in Boon Lay Drive on July 28 last year.
He sold the laptop for $400 and spent the money.
He also pleaded guilty to robbing Chinese national Chen Jin Bo, 39, together with his 31-year-old accomplice, of her handbag and valuables totaling $332 in Woodlands on Nov 19, 2010.
The court heard that he was cash-strapped and went along with his friend's idea to rob.
They drove around in a six-seater vehicle but could not find an easy target.
They then went to Geylang where the accomplice lured Ms Chen into the vehicle on the pretext of getting a massage service from her for $100.
When Ms Chen felt suspicious and tried to escape, Abusali grabbed her neck from behind and pulled her hair.
The accomplice took her handbag and punched her when she resisted.
They dragged her to the rear passengers' seat, bound her and robbed her of her belongings.
