KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 10, 2013): Police have busted an international drug trafficking and smuggling syndicate and seized drugs worth RM50 million with the arrest of five Malaysians, one a woman, in two raids in Cheras and Kajang on Monday.
The suspects, aged between 26 and 57, were believed to be active in trafficking drugs since early this year, said Bukit Aman Narcotics CID director Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said.
He said the syndicate would smuggle drugs from Myanmar by land and sea for distribution in the local market and also to neighbouring countries and Australia.
In the first raid, at a terrace house in Taman Gemilang, Cheras, at about 8.45pm, two men and a woman were arrested with 90.12kg of syabu, said Noor Rashid.
In the second raid, at a house in Bandar Sungai Long, Kajang, two men were arrested and 119.8kg of syabu, 40.47kg of heroin and 26.85kg of ecstasy pills were seized.
Police also seized nine luxury cars, two laptops, jewellery and RM51,229 of cash in both raids.
Meanwhile in GEORGE TOWN, the Customs Department seized 7.4kg of syabu worth RM1.48 million on Sunday.
Penang Customs Director Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said an enforcement team made the seizure after spotting three men acting suspiciously in a sampan about 4am off the beach in Teluk Kumbar.
"The team ordered the boatmen to stop but they continued to row towards the shore. The suspects then jumped out and fled into the darkness," he said today.
"Three personnel from the Customs Marine Unit were slightly injured after they fell during the chase," he added.
