SINGAPORE - A 56-year-old man will be charged in court on Wednesday (Jan 6) with assaulting an officer from the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF).

The incident took place on Nov 6, 2015, when the man visited MSF's Social Service Office at Toa Payoh to seek financial aid.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the man had turned aggressive during an interview with the 34-year-old female MSF officer.


He started hitting her before he was stopped by other MSF officers. Police officers from Tanglin Divison who responded to the incident arrested the man.

He will be charged with an offence of Voluntarily Causing Hurt to a Public Servant.

If convicted, he could be jailed up to seven years, fined or caned, or any combinations of the these punishments.

In a Facebook post on Nov 17, Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin said he would "not tolerate any behaviour by anyone that causes harm to my officers".
