In my opinion an independent candidate or a 3rd candidate sponsored by the Republicans (unlikely IMO) will split Clinton's votes rather than Trump's votes. Will in fact increase the probability of a Trump victory.

Would be interesting to see how the Hillary camp reacts if such goes through as it will be telling whether she feels her votes will be split.

A 3rd candidate is a viable strategy to split Hilary's votes. It worked before though it was not intentional when it came to Bush Jr, in 2000 against Gore when consumer advocate and liberal independent candidate Ralph Nader split the democrat votes.

This Elections, people are confused, fed up and may just go for change and any change. Trump has picked up on topics that are not politically correct but what many feel. A split may not be necessary though helpful.

With Trump we know what to expect, with Hillary no one actually knows what she is believes in or not.

You don't need to. Same with the PAP, all you need is to opt out or ship out if you disagree.
