MFA envoy to attend Ionescu trial Wednesday

The trial of former Romanian diplomat Silviu Ionescu resumes in Bucharest on Wednesday.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said special envoy to Romania, Mr Anil Kumar Nayar, will attend the hearing.

He will be accompanied by a representative from the Attorney-General's Chambers.

Ionescu is on trial for culpable manslaughter, fleeing the scene of an accident in Singapore, and giving false statements.

Key witnesses have testified in the trial via video link from Singapore.

I do believe the Romanians also want a closure to this case. If they are not interested in taking that scum to task, they would not have wasted so much time arranging for this trial.

I'm on good terms with one Romanian. She said that she and many around her are deeply embarrassed by Ionescu's bad behaviour. This is especially so at a time when Romania wants to go beyond its image as an ex-Soviet satellite.
