Reform Party to join SDA

[Perspective]

Certainly high chances of that now that RP has invited Chiam (of SDA/SPP) to speak at RP's internal conference this Saturday, where the conference will also make the decision to join SDA or not.

Surely it means RP leadership must be interested in the idea to invite CST and only they have the power to invite a non party member. Also, with Chiam's presence there, members will more likely than not vote for the proposal.

Interesting landmark occurence.

Singapore Democratic Alliance has a nice name and that's all to it. It look like a big shell with nothing inside with 3 major oppo parties WP, NSP, SDP deciding not to join.

SPP is Chiam, don't know anything about Singapore Justice Party and I'm sure everyone here remember the last time Singapore Malay National Organization (PKMS) made the national news...

Reform Party, SDA to seek in-principle okay for possible election alliance

SINGAPORE: Two opposition parties in Singapore are set to take another step towards an alliance for the next General Election.

Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam of the Reform Party said his party and the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) headed by Potong Pasir MP Chiam See Tong are seeking in-principle approval from their central executive committees.

This comes about a month after both parties held their first joint walkabout in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC.

Mr Jeyaretnam said his party will seek in-principle approval on 8 May, while Mr Chiam intends to do so on 7 May.

The Reform Party leader added that once this is obtained, his party will ask members to give in-principle approval to start negotiations with the SDA.

But he said there can be no certainty that final agreement will be reached.

Mr Jeyaretnam also said there are plans to get the Reform Party's first batch of candidates endorsed for the Election.

That is why RP joining SDA will make it not just a "big shell". Thought you would be for a more united opposition (even if the opposition won't totally come together).

NSP was with SDA until 2006. Understand they tried to rejoin SDA but this time through merger with SPP. Apparently things must have not worked out, but we'll never know.

NSP has grown and progressed since leaving the alliance. They made the right decision to leave and is now moving in the right direction.

SDA or rather SPP its main party in SDA, had not grown over the years under an one-man show leadership. Today, it is still very weak, but RP joining them may or may not change things for the better.

RP being a new party may want to seek alliance with SDA, to contest under their umbrella as the next GE is near. They may yet end up following the footsteps of NSP, when evenually they find that they are not progressing as another component party of SDA.

Unless the SDA change leadership, can't see the SDA led by the SPP can produce any real threat to the ruling party. Sad to say that.
