Mr Teo said: "The voters in Hougang should feel quite free to vote now. Because there's no incumbent, both of them have left. And so I think it's an opportunity now for the Hougang residents to vote in the candidate who they think will be able to serve them best with integrity, commitment and sincerity."

Mr Teo was referring to Mr Low Thia Khiang, the former Hougang MP who is now serving in Aljunied GRC, and his successor Mr Yaw Shin Leong, who was sacked from the Workers' Party in February after rumours of his extramarital affairs surfaced.

Mr Teo added that he has confidence in PAP candidate Desmond Choo. "Whether or not he'll be voted in, I think he's really the underdog. But of course, Hougang residents have always had the penchant for voting in underdogs too, so who knows? We'll have to leave it in the hands of the voters," he said.
