Ptve by invitation only event organised by Function8(civil society grp set up by former political detainees n activists) to be held this sunday @The Substation featuring a reading of a new political play n launch of 2 new books has suddenly been cancelled because The Substation itself has cancelled the booking of the venue...
One of the books is 'Escape from the Lion's Paw', a collection of essays by singapore's political exiles inclu the late francis khoo, it is edited by former political detainees teoh soh lung n low yit leng...the 2nd book is 'Smokescreens And Mirrors: Tracing The 'Marxist Conspiracy' by none other than Tan Wah Piow, where he provides his account n analysis of wat happened in this 1987 ISD Operation Spectrum matter...
Besides the book launches, tge event was suppose to include a reading of 'Square Moon' a new political play by Wong Souk Yee(another ex political detainee)...her play centres on mistaken identity n political intrigue...where a prisoner escapes from jail n to cover up the security lapse, a fictional homeland security dept disfigures one of 'marxist' detainees to pass him off as the escaped prisoner...
Tan Tee Seng an ex political detainee n member of Function 8 was reported to hv told ST Life tat The Substation theartre had been booked mths in advance but were only informed by the The Substation last fri. tat the booking had been cancelled...Tan appeared to believe tat The Substation's decision to pull the booking came after a meeting wif the National Arts Council...he said The Substation did not give any reason why the booking was cancelled...The Substation apparently told ST Life..."The Substation has been advised on the content of the play Square Moon and the event had to be cancelled"...
It was also reported tat The Substation is partially funded by the Government. One of the National Arts Council's funding guidelibes states that it would not fund projects that "disoarage or demean givernment bodies, public institutions ir national leaders, and/or subvert the nation's security or stability...
